Refinery Characterization Plan ENI Div. R & M of Taranto, National Interest Site (SIN). Investigations have been extended to the entire area of the plant, approx. 275 ha. They were carried out approx. 1,000 characterization surveys, the creation of a monitoring network of approx. a hundred piezometers, the withdrawal of approx. 3,000 samples and the examination of approx. 30,000 analytical parameters. Within the SIN of Taranto was the first environmental characterization plan approved by the Ministry of the Environment RIBO service.

The refinery in Taranto
Made in the 1960s, it is the largest refinery in Italy, just a few kilometers from the largest oilfield in Europe in Basilicata, to which it is connected via a pipeline. The petrochemical plants were built by Shell, subsequently discovered by ENI, and are located on a portion of the coastal area of the industrial zone of Taranto whose subsoil consists of predominantly carbonate deposits in the first meters below which there is a powerful layer of approx. 80-100 meters of waterproof soil (Bradano’s clay).

Characterization Plan
The Characteristic Plan, built for the 270 hectares of the Taranto refinery, has included over a thousand surveys, over five thousand meters of drilling, over one hundred piezometers, hundreds of hydraulic burrow tests, over six thousand head space analysis, over two hundred and fifteen soil samples sent to the laboratory, over a hundred thousand chemical parameters tested in soil samples and over five thousand in groundwater samples.

Safe-keeping activities were handled for about 2,500 meters of barriers made with Pump & Treat techniques: passive drainage trenches with suction pumps and Well Point systems with over 200 suction points. Extracted waste management, mass balance and FIR daily.
